Why Pressure Points?

What happens during an attack or confrontation?

During a violent attack or aggressive confrontation the human body releases adrenaline and other chemicals (noradrenaline and cortisol) which significantly increase strength, pain tolerance and threshold, which in turn gives the body the ability to deal with significantly more physical abuse and pain than possible under normal circumstances. This is the human body’s primal, automatic and instinctive inborn response to a perceived threatening situation.

Why study Pressure Point Combat Fighting?

In a violent attack or confrontation your attacker will be extremely aggressive and full of adrenaline, which means he will most likely be able to handle your self defence advances and strikes to a large degree, leaving you in a compromising situation. There are numerous stories of people getting violently attacked or getting into a fight, breaking their hands and joints, taking severe physical punishment and beating without being aware of their severe bodily injuries until after the confrontation was over and only then collapsed or lost consciousness. This adrenalized effect and increased pain tolerance could be even further enhanced in the instance where your attacker is under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

Knowing how to attack the pressure points and weaker anatomical structures of the body allows you to bypass the body’s muscular structures, and directly access and shut down the nervous system of your attacker. You no longer have to fight strength with strength; you now have the ability to control a violent confrontational/situation, incapacitate and knock your attacker unconscious with less force and much bigger reaction, significantly improving your chance of survival.

In order to be able to use pressure points effectively in fighting and self defence, it is critical to be proficient in combat basics which include movement, striking and breathing. The reality is that very few martial artists (even seasoned martial artists) know how to move effectively and intelligently to avoid getting struck, or being able to move in such a way as to minimise the effect and impact of strikes when caught off guard or in an environment where it is difficult to move freely.

In the case of a violent confrontation or attack you will more than likely have to deal with multiple attackers. Dealing with multiple attackers means that you have to move more intelligently as not be struck from different directions, and avoid getting into prolonged grappling situations as you will become an easy target. You need to be quick, incapacitate your attackers quickly while remaining unpredictable.
